Nakayama Maruka Kiita Lv 5+ Super Rare ~Private Reserve
Super Vivid Yellow Kiita that's super Hard = Super Rare.
*UPDATE I have now sealed and protected the Sides, Bottom and Maruka Stamp on this prized kiita with clear (translucent yellow) Urushi
Kiita power in a hard finisher.
And it's Maruka, and not any, but Kato San to Hatanaka Era 1940's- early 50's. The oldest of Marukas with the first stamps. The old ones are super indelible, they really soak into the stone ends.
Super fine and still greys the slurry in short work. The more I hone on it the more I think maybe I won't sell this one just yet. I enjoy every subsequent edge more than the last.
*A neat find. I purchased the collection of an old avid collector in Japan who had an obsession with Nakayama. Tennen Toishi from many mines, but most Nakayama.
I didn't know they were Nakayama because of stamps, I knew because of the continuity of the collection and the previous custodian and I didn't know which were Marukas only that some were (some much older). I didn't care, as I don't hone on stamps. They're on the end or I lap them off.
I had never seen a stamp on this toishi, and I keep my toishi well seasoned. I scrub the tops, but not the sides. They're beautiful, but they're tools. The patina of slurry that built up over the years from use by their previous owner is a thing of beauty to me, and so I only ever added to it. But Patina doesn't make for good pictures. So in cleaning some of my stones for their picture day I was removing years of slurry patina from the sides and freshly lapping when I noticed what looked like an inventory stamp or writing. I snapped a few pics with my phone and got to scrubbing and found one of the old Kato stamps on the side from the 40's-early 50's when Hatanaka San took possession!
