Japanese Whetstones

$ 115.00

This was purchased along with some Aoto at a Sanjo workshop event, where it was recommended as a lower grit Bevel setter. Thirsty stone! Soaking it for 10-20 minutes (max) before hand or honing with a corner under a dripping spout can help overcome this. On a kitchen knife it's not bad at all, on a razor it's great. I prefer one of my cherished Kiita or a chosera 1k to shapton glass 3 and 6k or suita for bevel setting and sharpening my razors most of the time. (Tennen Toishi are a much nicer experience because I can often set a bevel and shave off the same hone!)

it's a nice stone to have in your collection to call on when it's suited for the steel you have to work with, and a great way to go if you don't have a wide range kiita or razor quality suita yet but want to set bevels on a natural without refreshing botan slurry.

it works good and the slurry breaks down which gives it some range. It's in the 2000-4000 grit range in cutting strength and 1-4k in finish depending on steel, pressure and how you make and work the slurry.  It leaves wider but shallower scratches than a synthetic which leaves less time healing the steel on your tennen toishi to finish. Just don't expect it to outpace a  sigma or other low grit synthetic.

Kick up a little slurry with a #400 atoma or don't.

**Please do not do this with rare stones, as it will damage them: but with this stone you can try as, I have, with coffee on ikarashi and it works well to mitigate the thirst of the stone if you don't feel like soaking it or honing with a corner under a spout.

You shape it to your desired format. If you like, send me an email and I'll slice the top off so you have less lapping to do, just know it may take a day or two for me to ship if I'm doing this as I am always very busy.
