Nakayama Tenjyou Suita Suminagashi Lv 4+ ~Private Reserve
From my Private Reserve!
Super Rare and beautiful Nakayama Suminagashi from the Tenyou Strata in the Hon-Kuchi Naori from which Uchigomori is found. Most people have not heard of Suminagashi as it is so rare; Suminagashi is a process of marbling ink on the surface tension of water, and in rare toishi it refers to the mesmerising swirling of color like this one with its Nebulae.
This one is very Clean and free of toxic inclusions and lines. Very consistent and very fine for a suita. This is one of my favourite stones from my collection-- it's also one of the most beautiful stones I've ever seen and is truly a pleasure to hone on.
Saw marks on the side are from a hand saw which mean this stone was mined by hand pre WWII.
Friction fitted into a cleverly carved toishi dai (wood base), with weep holes in base to allow water to drain out and for your fingers to push through and remove stone from base for cleaning or just marveling at the beautiful kawa skin on back.
Honing quality: Razor Quality, as final sharpening before polish, but with experience or if you have a preference for 12k and couticle edges then it can be a finisher.
It can also easily be used as a finisher for high end Kitchen Knives, Planes and Chisels. Excellent Honing feel and feedback.
Length- 210.2 mm
Width- 75.5 mm
Thickness- 20.5 mm
Toishi only - 675 g
Toishi Dai only- 308 g
Extremely collectible and rare stone.
Razors, as pre-polisher.
Also good for high quality large chisels. I wouldn't recommend honing smaller chisels on this large of a superb awasedo for reasons of maintaining hone flatness. But it could be done by expert.
Range for Razors:
Legend: " + " = yes |" - " = no | " / " = yes for kamisori, but only with nagura for western straights. | " DN " = With Diamond Nagura , " AN " = with asano nagura
Sharpening: +++, DN
finishing: ++, DN
